And last November, right before Alibaba’s coveted Singles’ Day shopping event, Chinese regulators drafted a new antitrust law to take down monopolistic behavior within the online shopping market. Government probes: Regulators recently launched probes into some of the country’s largest companies, including Alibaba and its affiliate firm Ant Group.

According to the etailer, shoppers spent nearly $31 billion on Alibaba sites, Taobao and Tmall last year. And in a 2018 survey by JDA, 98% of digital buyers in China planned to shop on Singles’ Day.

A joint effort of Shopkick, Fashwire, and Coresight Research will feature two dozen national retailers in the inaugural 10.10 event, a US counterpart to China’s Singles’ Day, known as 11.11 and held on November 11. The 10.10 shopping festival will happen October 9-11. Walmart has also ratcheted up the competition this year with the September 15 introduction of its Amazon Prime counterpart, Walmart+.
