Ecommerce’s Share of Total Retail in Context. When looking at ecommerce’s share of total retail, it’s common to exclude automotive and gas sales, which make up a huge chunk of the retail economy and are almost exclusively purchased through traditional channels. Excluding gas, ecommerce will make up 16.9% of total retail sales in 2021. Excluding both automotive and gas, that figure rises to 20.9%.
