Among the countries we break out, Nigeria tops the list with 98.1% penetration, followed by Egypt at 98.0%. Nigeria and Egypt are also the two fastest-growing countries for Facebook in 2020. In fact, half of the top 10 by growth are in this region. In addition to Nigeria (up 27.5%) and Egypt (up 19.0%), South Africa (14.9%), the United Arab Emirates (9.5%), and Saudi Arabia (8.3%) are on the list.

Hong Kong, like Egypt, was one of very few countries where GlobalWebIndex reported a decline in usage of video streaming in H1 2020. But there was a substantial gain in the share who had accessed TV shows, films, or other content from SVOD providers, such as Netflix, to 48.5%. As of H1 2020, 37.0% of Hong Kong respondents had invested in a smart TV; again, this value was lower than in H1 2019.

Moreover, time spent with social actually fell in Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, and the Philippines, to name a few. In many advanced economies—including Germany, Sweden, Spain, the UK, and the US—time spent with PCs and tablets still exceeds time spent with mobile devices, and by a large margin.

Between H1 2019 and H1 2020, ownership of desktops, laptops, and/or tablets declined most sharply in developing markets, including Brazil, China, Egypt, and India—all countries where the focus has long been on mobile devices and services. But the same trend appeared to a lesser degree in several other countries too, including France, Russia, Sweden, and the US.
