According to GlobalData, when asked which behaviors consumers expect to do more often once things have returned to normal, 68.2% of US adults said curbside pickup and 59.6% said in-store pickup. Grocery is the original and best use case for curbside pickup, and it’s where the behavior is most likely to carry forward into the future.

But perhaps the biggest driver in the past year has been the rise in click-and-collect ecommerce—particularly curbside pickup. According to our bimonthly ecommerce survey conducted by Bizrate Insights, in-store pickup climbed from 18% of US digital buyers in February to 22% in June, while curbside pickup jumped from 7% to 22% during that same period.

Walmart and Target are also riding the wave because of their curbside pickup prowess, though Target missed an opportunity by not yet having enabled its perishable goods inventory for click and collect. However, in recently announcing that fresh and frozen groceries have become available for curbside pickup, Target should further improve its standing.
