BVOD’s share of combined TV and BVOD ad spend, though still small, will rise from 12.6% this year to 15.8% in 2026. As time spent with linear TV declines, broadcasters are looking to BVOD to pick up some of the slack and help them maintain their ad revenue streams. Looking across the whole TV spectrum, BVOD will drive ad revenue growth.

BVOD plays an important role in the UK digital video space. The largest BVOD platform in the country, BBC iPlayer, reaches almost as many people as Netflix. According to Q1 2021 household data from Ofcom’s Technology Tracker, 64% used the iPlayer to watch TV programs or movies, only 2 percentage points behind those that used Netflix.

BARB data cited by Thinkbox indicated that 8% of broadcaster TV viewing time in 2020 was via BVOD platforms.
