Nielsen data for Q1 2020 showed smartphone users ages 35 to 49 averaging 32 hours, 31 minutes weekly with the category “app/web on a smartphone.”. One oddity of the pandemic has been an increase in mobile usage, even when people are stuck at home. Xers were part of this right from the start.

Both mobile and PC time rose year over year (YoY); PCs recorded the larger gain, though. Nearly 44% of internet users owned a smart TV in H1 2021, though annual growth was minimal. Web-enabled TVs gained popularity especially in the 35-to-54 age bracket, but affluent respondents continued to register the highest penetration, at nearly 60%. Traditional broadcast media still attract large audiences.

But as in previous years, web-enabled TVs were more popular among females than males, and penetration was especially high among internet users in more affluent households (45.4%). Several other advanced devices are picking up momentum after a sluggish start. In H1 2020, just 5.0% of internet users had a smart wristband, and 6.6% owned a smartwatch.

Nearly 49% of tablet users in France will make a mobile purchase this year, compared with 41.8% of smartphone users. The age profile of tablet users goes some way to account for this: Many older internet users find the larger screen more convenient and comfortable, especially for purchases. In Germany, the device pattern for mobile buying is rather different.

In H1 2021, respondents spent an average 3 hours, 40 minutes (3:40) each day on PCs and tablets, compared with 3:01 on mobile. Just more than half (50.7%) of internet users polled had read a print newspaper in the previous month, including more than 60% of those ages 45 to 64, and nearly 57% of affluents. Readership was also much higher among males (55.0%) than females (46.5%).

Elsewhere in mobile, Hispanics don’t stand out as heavy users. We estimate that tablet user penetration in 2021 among Hispanics will be slightly below the total-population figure, at 51.2% vs. 53.1%. Signals are mixed on the extent of Hispanics’ smart speaker ownership.

Internet users spent an average of 3:30 per day with their mobile phones in H1 2021, up from 3:12 last year. PCs and tablets accounted for 4:27 per day, about half an hour more than in H1 2020. The survey also highlighted growing interest in some newer digital devices.

Smartphone ownership in this mobile-first country remained very high in H1 2021, at 98.5% of internet users ages 16 to 64. Some 73.0% of respondents in Malaysia also owned a desktop and/or laptop. Tablet penetration seems to have plateaued at just under one-third of respondents, though that share was more than 40% in the oldest age bracket, and close to 46% among affluent internet users.

Of the adult mobile banking users we surveyed in the US, 87% said that mobile is their primary banking channel.
