The data: Twenty percent of US consumers plan to shop more during the 2021 holiday season than they did last year, according to Deloitte’s annual holiday retail survey. Total holiday retail and ecommerce sales are projected to hit $1.092 trillion this year, up from $1.064 trillion in 2020, per eMarketer forecasts from Insider Intelligence.

France and Germany will squeeze just inside the top 10 for digital ad spending growth this year, as the European continent continues its methodical transition to digital advertising. The advanced economies of Western Europe will increase digital spending by 14.6% this year, a figure that nearly matches the worldwide rate of 15.6%.

In Germany, TV’s share of total media spend will be less than 20% in 2022. As in France, digital formats in Germany will account for over half of the country’s total ad spend in 2022. However, growth will be marginally slower in Germany than in France between 2023 and 2026. In both Germany and France, outlays are greater for search ads than for digital display ads.

Overall ecommerce also grew well last year (14.5%) and will continue to this year (14.1%), stemming the tide of click and collect stealing share from legacy ecommerce. Given the general decline in click and collect’s pace of growth, the enduring strength of delivery-based ecommerce, and the resurgence of in-store shopping, it appears that click and collect has become a status quo option.
