In our latest forecast for time spent with media, we estimate that the amount of time US adult Facebook users spend on the platform will hit a low of 33 minutes (0:33) in 2020, down from 0:34 in 2019, 0:36 in 2018 and a peak of 0:40 in 2016.

Facebook’s European income won’t be damaged by the pandemic to the same extent. We estimate that the social platform’s ad revenues in the EU-5 will rise 4.6% this year. But that’s a long way from the 25.6% gain Facebook posted in 2019 and the 17.2% we originally forecast for 2020.

It will be many months before consumers in China decide that, for one, the economy is solidly back on track and their jobs are not at risk, and two, that the chances of a major coronavirus recurrence are low. Both factors will likely need to be met before spending can get back to normal.

Consumer confidence and spending power also declined, largely because many individuals lost their jobs or a significant share of their income. Close to six in 10 internet users ages 16 and older polled by Kantar in April 2020 said that the coronavirus had impacted their income, or they expected it to. We estimate that time spent with TV by kids ages 11 and younger will be 1 hour, 57 minutes (1:57) this year, more than 1 hour lower than in 2015, when it was 3:02.

Quebec’s economic upswing is also evident in rising disposable incomes. In May 2019, the Institut de la statistique du Québec reported growing disposable incomes in the province, a trend that started in 2016. This is closing a gap with the rest of Canada and increased the purchasing power of consumers in Quebec.
