But popularity doesn’t tell the whole story: Despite TikTok’s popularity and influence on culture, Instagram still led engagement with 89% of respondents saying they used it at least once per month, followed by Snap at 84% and TikTok at 80%. TikTok’s popularity, along with its push toward in-app shopping and social commerce, is helping drive its ad revenues far above its competitors.

Instagram Grows Its Share of Facebook Ad Revenues. Instagram continues to grow faster than core Facebook. This year, Instagram will account for over half—52.6%—of Facebook’s total US net ad revenues. Its share will increase to 60.9% by 2023. Worldwide, core Facebook still accounts for most of Facebook’s total revenues, though it’s still losing share to Instagram.

The PwC Gen Z respondents noted Instagram as the top social site for shopping 74% of the time, followed by YouTube at 71%. That differed significantly from millennials, who chose Facebook as their top social media channel for shopping 72% of the time.

Respondents were considerably less likely to perceive ads on Instagram as annoying versus those on Facebook. Just 21% of Instagram users agreed or strongly agreed that ads are annoying on Instagram, versus 33% of users who said Facebook. Not all Facebook users also use Instagram, but this comparison is a strong indication that users are less likely to be annoyed by ads on Instagram.
