This year, we broke out CTV viewers by generation for the first time. US CTV viewers in 2020 will total 45.7 million for Gen Z; 56.5 million for millennials; 48.5 million for Gen X; and 32.8 million for boomers. Compared with the same figures a year ago, Gen Z viewers increased by 7.7%; millennials by 3.5%; Gen X by 1.8%; and boomers by 8.3%.

For the first time, we broke out YouTube viewers by age, generation, gender and ethnicity. YouTube’s audience skews slightly male; it will reach 75.4% of male internet users this year, compared with 71.4% of female internet users. Black and Hispanic users are a little more likely to use YouTube than other ethnicities, but the differences are small.

Evaluating social usage growth by age instead of by generation shows a very different pattern. This year, there will be just 1.1% growth among teens ages 12 to 17, reaching 18.4 million users, and 0.3% growth among 18- to 24-year-olds, reaching 27.9 million users. While Gen Z grows, this year will mark the first-ever decline in the number of Gen X users.

Insider Intelligence polled US adults in Q4 2021 and found patient preferences differed by age. In the Optum survey, 88% of doctors said they used video services compared with the 80% who did phone visits. The most popular platforms and devices used for telehealth visits were already familiar to physicians.
