YouTube video ads are highly interruptive of the content experience. Most ads on YouTube are in-stream video ads, including pre-, mid-, and post-roll ads. In some cases, these ads can’t be skipped, forcing people to view the entire ad to get to the content they came for. We also expect that users are simply seeing more ads on the platform.

The standard now states that viewing should be reported as relative to the actual length of the ad. If someone watches two-thirds of a 15-second ad, they’re credited with watching two-thirds of an ad. The same would be true of someone watching two-thirds of a 30-second ad, even though that equates to more viewing time.

Facebook and Instagram will be the biggest beneficiaries among the social properties; combined, they will take in 84.2% of social video ad spending this year, or $11.32 billion. We expect most of those video ads to appear in either the Facebook or Instagram feeds or in Instagram Stories.
