On the other hand, grocery was one of Germany’s fastest-growing ecommerce categories in 2019, with sales 17.3% higher than the year prior, per bevh.

New research suggests concerns over quality are hindering grocery ecommerce, as many shoppers are wary of buying fresh and frozen goods online, thereby preventing full-basket shopping trips. An August 2019 eMarketer survey conducted by Bizrate Insights found that online grocery shoppers are twice as likely to buy nonperishables as perishable items.

“The convenience factor that Amazon offers is huge,” said Gillian MacPherson, vice president of digital product and strategy at Epsilon. “It’s a nice one-stop shop.” She noted a recent Epsilon report that showed about six in 10 Xers had shopped at Amazon in the previous 12 months. While Gen Xers do lots of buying online, the extent varies among categories.
