We expect the increased adoption of connected TV (CTV) devices will also contribute to stagnant console usage over time, as consoles will be used less frequently as entertainment hubs for streaming video and other services that CTVs offer. With the influx in CTV usage, some consumers will likely reevaluate their need to purchase expensive consoles in the future.

Some 82.0% of respondents said they had used social networking sites or apps (including YouTube) in the prior month, and spent an average of 2:09 per day with social sites.

The age of the connected TV (CTV) is upon us—a CTV is a TV set connected to the internet through built-in capabilities or through another device such as a Blu-ray player, game console, or set-top box (e.g., Apple TV, Google Chromecast, Roku). The Xer audience for YouTube is even larger. Another Morning Consult survey, fielded in July 2020, found 71% of Xers saying they were YouTube viewers. CivicScience polling in November 2020 found 33% of 35-to-54s saying they visit YouTube daily. Xers are often involved in sharing subscriptions to services like Netflix.

Google Play Music is set to shut down later this year, and its parent company is working to make it easy for users to transfer their accounts to YouTube Music (another music-specific app), which offers integration with consumers’ YouTube accounts.

Over the next few months, Adobe, Facebook, Google and YouTube will all host virtual versions of their popular conferences, which should give us a better sense of the format's potential as a replacement. Marketers are distributing content in a format that is more event-like.
