Smartphone Shipments Slide: Strategy Analytics reports that the shipment of smartphones worldwide fell by 9% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2017, to 400 million. The firm said it was the largest slide in smartphone shipments it had ever recorded. Strategy Analytics said shrinking demand in China was responsible for most of the decline, as the market there is maturing and consumers are hanging on to their handsets for longer periods of time.
Smartphone Slide Part 2: According to International Data Corporation (IDC), global smartphone shipments slipped 6.3% in Q4 2017 compared with the same quarter a year earlier. IDC said Apple shipped more smartphones in the final quarter of last year than any other manufacturer, surpassing previous titleholder Samsung.
Esports Audience: Esports has strong reach among young males, according to recent data from GlobalWebIndex. The firm found that, in Q3 2017, a significant number of males ages 16 to 24 had watched an esports tournament over the previous month. That engagement rate was highest in the Philippines, at 40%, but was also relatively high in China and several other markets in Southeast Asia. About one-fifth of respondents in the US said they had watched an esports tourney within the past month.
