UK Digital Users: eMarketer's Updated Estimates for 2016

Executive Summary

Internet use is ubiquitous in the UK, with more than eight in 10 people expected to access the internet regularly this year. But smartphones and the mobile internet are increasingly changing the way people in the country engage online. This report will examine eMarketer’s latest forecast for the UK digital audience through 2020.

  • The UK’s advanced internet audience is supported by a highly developed broadband market. This year, 53.2 million people, or 80.8% of the country’s population, will use the internet regularly via any device.
  • In 2016, 41.0 million people in the UK, or 62.3% of the population, will use smartphones. Growth will continue through 2020, driven by low-cost models, expanding 4G coverage and improved device functionality and bigger screens.
  • The UK tablet market has reached maturity and growth has slowed significantly, coming in at an estimated 7.2% in 2016 and falling to 2.9% by 2020. Future sales are likely to come from device replacements rather than new devices.
  • More than half of people in the UK will visit social networks regularly by the end of this year. Facebook is still the most popular platform, with nearly 90% of social network users expected to visit the site at least monthly.
  • The vast majority of social networkers are using mobile phones to engage on social media. More than 90% of UK social network users, 81.1% of UK Facebook users and 94.5% of UK Twitter users will use their mobile phones to access their accounts this year.
