Executive Summary

Discount and variety stores include multichannel retailers selling everything under the sun, membership clubs with an in-store focus and dollar stores, which have been successful without emphasizing ecommerce. But nearly all of these retailers are boosting their digital presence in one way or another.

  • Due to its reliance on bulk goods, groceries and items that are too inexpensive to make shipping cost-effective, discount and variety stores have never been a natural fit for ecommerce. But that’s beginning to change; consumers are becoming more accustomed to buying perishables online, and startups and delivery services are emerging to facilitate this activity.
  • Despite low ecommerce penetration, Walmart.com and Target.com are popular with online shoppers, ranking within the top five by traffic and perception.
  • Delivery is still a work in progress, and competition with Amazon is fierce. One bright spot in this sector is the advent of buy online, pickup in-store (BOPUS).
  • Big-box stores are encouraging innovation by acquiring or partnering with digital-first companies, which tend to be nimbler at ecommerce.

"US discount and variety store retail sales have grown steadily since 2009, reaching $550.83 billion in 2016. However, the sector’s percentage of total retail sales has declined during that span."
