Executive Summary

Consumption of digital video—such as streamed or downloaded TV shows and series, YouTube clips and long-form content accessed via paid-for services such as Netflix—is booming in France. Many viewers now watch on mobile devices as well as on TVs and PCs.

  • An estimated 32.2 million people in France—nearly two-thirds of all internet users—will watch video on digital platforms at least monthly in 2017.
  • Live (aka linear) TV still dominates viewing habits for most people, in terms of both penetration and time spent with the medium. Some 91.5% of France’s adult population will be TV viewers in 2017, eMarketer estimates.
  • Digital viewing continues to rise, however. Historically, teens and younger adults tend to watch more digital video than older consumers, and spend more time with digital video content. But viewing patterns are becoming more complex as the audience grows.
  • Mobile devices are increasingly central to video viewing. A recent AOL study found that 63% of internet users watched video daily on their mobile phones.
