Executive Summary

There are few multichannel retailers in the consumer electronics sector, which has seen its share of bankruptcies and consolidations. Though retail sales growth in this space has been flat for the past few years, ecommerce sales have been more positive.

  • The number of consumer electronics retailers in the US has decreased in the past decade. The rise of online retail has contributed to this decline, but that’s just part of the story.
  • Digital shopping behavior in this sector differs by subcategory. For instance, computer buyers tend to purchase via desktop, while consumers buying games are more comfortable with mobile commerce.
  • Smart homes and connected devices are opening up new opportunities for consumer electronics retailers (as well as anyone else who sells these products).

"In 2017, US retail ecommerce sales of computer and consumer electronics will reach $75.61 billion, an 18.6% increase over 2016."
