US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics
Data is from the August 2017 US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics "Consumer Expenditure Survey: 2016." Data collection is carried out by the US Census Bureau under contract with the Bureau of Labor Statistics. An interview survey is conducted wherein each consumer unit is interviewed every 3 months over 5 calendar quarters. This portion of the survey is designed to obtain data on the types of expenditures respondents can recall for a period of 3 months or longer and include relatively large purchases. Respondents are also asked to keep track of their purchases made each day for 2 consecutive one-week periods for a diary survey. This survey is meant to capture data on frequently purchased smaller items. Data is then integrated when possible.
