Job Seekers in Spain Turn to Social Media to Broaden Their Search
Survey finds almost 50% of internet users in the country always use this platform when job hunting
How do internet users in Spain—a country with a 19% unemployment rate in March 2017—look for work? Across all ages, genders and job titles sought, the vast majority turn to social media, at least occasionally.
Nine out of 10 internet users in Spain surveyed by staffing agency Adecco and online job search site Infoempleo in November 2016 said they use social media as part of their job search.
The leading reason internet users in Spain follow brands on social media is not to get up-to-date discounts and promotions or to see the latest company news, but to catch the latest posts regarding employment opportunities. According to the survey, almost 70% of respondents use social media for that purpose.
In Q4 2016, jobless figures in Spain fell to 19%, its lowest rate since Q3 2009. Still, the country has the second highest unemployment rate in the EU, after Greece.
The dire job situation has encouraged many to use nontraditional search methods. A June 2016 report from Tata Consultancy Services highlighted that far more internet users in Spain ages 18 to 29 used social media during their job search than an average young user in Europe.
While traditional destinations like job sites, recruitment companies and a specific company’s website are still the primary places internet users in Spain turn to when searching for employment, 45% of respondents in the Adecco/Infoempleo survey said they always or almost always turn to social media to find jobs.
eMarketer estimates that 74.0% of the population in Spain will be internet users in 2017, which is on the lower end of the spectrum in Western Europe.
