Retailers like Wal-Mart, Target and Walgreens made significant sales gains in 2015, and are expected to be still bigger by 2020. Amazon, another top retailer, is projected to have the highest growth, according to 2015 estimates.
Planet Retail ranked the top 20 retailers worldwide by total retail sales, including all sales channels and forecast how those firms would grow over the next several years. Amazon is expected to have the highest compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between 2015 and 2020. In 2015, Amazon had $113.69 billion in total retail sales. In 2020, the company is projected to make $211.20 billion.
Amazon’s relatively fast growth will push the internet giant ahead in the ranks, from No. 5 in 2015 to a projected second place in 2020, after only Wal-Mart.
Groupe Casino will see the second-fastest growth among the group studied through 2020. In 2015, the company made $66.29 billion and in 2020 it will make $92.99, a 7.0% CAGR. Costco and Auchan will see CAGRs nearly as high.
Albertson’s will see the lowest CAGR of the group, at 1.8%. The company made $59.89 billion in 2015 and is expected to make $65.48 billion in 2020.
Overall, worldwide retail sales—including in-store and internet purchases—surpassed $22 trillion in 2015, up 5.6% from 2014, eMarketer estimates.
Retail ecommerce sales will make up 7.4% of the total retail market worldwide, or $1.671 trillion. By 2019, that will jump to $3.578 trillion, yet retail ecommerce will account for just 12.8% of retail purchases.
