Social media platforms are helping small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in England promote goods and services.
An April 2015 survey by the Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS) found that almost half (46%) of respondents used social media platforms. Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter were the top three.
Furthermore, using social media for business purposes is different than simply having a profile on a platform. To compare, 28% of SMBs in England had a profile on Facebook, but 32% used that same platform to promote their business. Similarly, while 18% of respondents had a LinkedIn profile, 29% used LinkedIn for business reasons.
Respondents are definitely focused on using these platforms for marketing. More than nine in 10 respondents who have their own profile on social media used it to promote goods and services. Moreover, eight in 10 used it as a place to disseminate contact information to customers. Additionally, almost one third (29%) of respondents said they were directly selling goods and services on social media. Only 3% of SMBs indicated that there was no particular purpose for which they used social media.
