Strong growth keeps Apple in first place ahead of Murphy USA, Tiffany & Co.
In May 2014, eMarketer analyzed store productivity at US-based retailers, and reported that Apple, Murphy USA and Tiffany & Co. led the pack, with the highest sales per square foot among the more than 225 retailers eMarketer tracks.
This year, that holds true, and despite varying patterns of growth, those three companies hold the same relative rankings. Apple, which has grown its per-square-foot sales by 9.8% over the past 12 months, now earns $5,009 by this metric. At the same time, productivity at Murphy USA has declined by 8.5% in the past year, dipping sales per square foot to $3,861 at the convenience store chain.
Michael Kors Holdings and lululemon athletica, which rounded out the top five a year ago, have also maintained their slots. Below them, however, rankings have shifted. Kate Spade & Co. moved from sixth- to fifth-most-productive retailer, surpassing Coach, which has now dropped to seventh place. Birks Group claims the No. 6 slot, up from No. 9 in 2014.
Costco is a new entrant on the list of the top 15, coming in 12th over the past 12 months and helping to push Vince out of the top 15.
There is significantly more movement when it comes to productivity growth. As of May 2014, Restoration Hardware was increasing its sales per square foot faster than any other retailer, at 24.1%. Now, the fastest gains are being made by Hudson's Bay Co. (21.6%), Ben Sherman (20.1%), Kate Spade & Co. (14.2%), Bassett Furniture (10.2%) and Apple (9.8%). Of that group, only Kate Spade made it into the top 15 a year ago.
