For digital video viewers in Argentina who want to watch TV content on a TV screen, smart TVs are the way to go, according to research from Carrier y Asociados. More than two in five digital video viewers surveyed in April said they used a smart TV for this purpose, ahead of 35% who simply hooked up their laptop to a TV set.
Video game consoles, which have traditionally been a common way for digital video viewers in the US to stream content to their TVs, were used by just 10% of respondents, while even fewer had over-the-top boxes like Apple TV.
In a separate question, Carrier y Asociados asked people who paid for some kind of video-on-demand (VOD) service—like Netflix or HBO Go—what devices they used to access that video content (not necessarily on TV screens). Laptops were most common, at 62%, followed by desktop computers and smart TVs, tied at 56% each. Around a quarter of respondents watched paid VOD programming on their smartphones, and 20% watched on tablets.
According to Digital TV Research Ltd., there were nearly half a million households in Argentina with Netflix subscriptions as of September 2014. Carrier y Asociados reported that based on its April polling, more than 1 million households were accessing paid VOD services, though it noted that not all households pay for their own subscription. Nearly half of internet users in the country viewed streaming video on TV sets.
