Digital privacy and security are topics of increasing importance across Asia-Pacific. In November 2014 research from Ipsos, internet users in emerging and developed markets throughout the region reported being more concerned about their online privacy than they were a year earlier.
The same survey found norms varied wildly across the region with respect to willingness of internet users to share their personal data with companies online. Slight majorities of internet users in Indonesia and India were willing to do so, while only around 45% of respondents in China or Hong Kong agreed. In Australia, two-thirds of internet users said it was unacceptable to share their personal info, and in Japan and South Korea, that percentage rose to around three-quarters.
Earlier research conducted in July 2014 by Aimia found that three-quarters of internet users in India would be willing to share information in exchange for a discount, however, along with just over half of respondents in Australia. When Ipsos MORI polled internet users around the world about a similar question in October 2013, 46% in India said they would turn over information in exchange for personalization or recommendations, along with 38% of internet users in China, 21% in South Korea, 20% in Australia and just 12% in Japan.
