What's the Future of Tablet Shipments in Japan?

Decline at present, but growth ahead

January 17, 2017 | Mobile

Tablet shipments in FY 2016 were down 3.7% in Japan from FY 2015, for a total of 8.7 million tablets, according to MM Research Institute (MMRI).

Tablet Shipments in Japan, FY 2016 & FY 2019 (millions)

The first half of 2015 saw 4.5 million units shipped, while the first half of 2016 saw 3.9 million.

ICT Research reported in June 2016 slightly higher total shipment figures—their FY 2016 is from April 2016 to March 2017—for a total of 9.5 million shipments. Either way, both studies predict one thing: growth in shipments is on the horizon.

For example, ICT predicts an increase to 10.4 million shipments in FY 2017 and 11.2 million in FY 2018, while MMRI predicts a jump from 8.7 million shipments in FY 2016 to 10.2 million in FY 2019.

eMarketer estimates a total of 33.7 million tablet users in 2016, over a quarter of the population. By 2017, that figure will reach 36.7 million users, nearly 30% of the population in Japan. eMarketer forecasts that by 2020, there will be over 41 million users, a third of the total population.
