Mobile World Congress, the giant industry event held in Barcelona each year, wraps up today after nearly a week of meetups, exhibitions, keynotes, and vast crowds spilling across eight pavilions.
eMarketer principal analyst Cathy Boyle, who was on hand at MWC, discusses emerging themes coming out of the event in the latest edition of eMarketer’s “Behind the Numbers” podcast.
“The official theme is the ‘Next Element,’ and what they’re proposing here is that mobile—and mobile connectivity—is becoming an elemental part of our lives,” Boyle said. “You definitely see that in a lot of exhibitions and content in the conference.”
“Immersive [technology] is another big theme. There’s also a lot of artificial intelligence and virtual reality companies here,” she said.
Meanwhile, though interest in wearables may be waning, there was still a big presence at MWC, Boyle said.
“It’s not as big as it was in past years, but there’s still a presence here,” she said.
