Video Gobbles Up Mobile Data Traffic in Russia

A majority of all mobile traffic is already due to video viewing

March 7, 2016

Mobile video accounted for a majority of all mobile data traffic in Russia last year—and one researcher estimates that by 2020, three-quarters of all mobile traffic will come from video viewing.

Mobile Data and Device Metrics in Russia, 2015 & 2020

According to Cisco Systems, mobile data traffic in Russia reached 1,816 MB per user per month in 2015—and 54% of that was chalked up to video. Traffic is expected to increase about ninefold by 2010, and an even stronger majority will come from video.

Over the same period, 4G traffic will also see a massive increase in its share of the pie. In 2015, just 17% of mobile data went across at 4G rates. But nearly two-thirds will do so by 2020.

According to March 2015 polling by Google and TNS, about three-quarters of smartphone internet users in Russia watched video on their devices at least sometimes. Twenty percent reported doing so daily, and another 31% did so on a weekly basis.

eMarketer estimates that Russia was home to 53.8 million smartphone users and 29.0 million tablet users in 2015.
