In Venezuela, Young Consumers Are Facebook's Biggest Fans

Over nine in 10 internet users are social networkers

Social network penetration among internet users is high in Venezuela, at 90.2% of those 15 and older, according to April 2014 polling by comScore Media Metrix. However, the country still trailed other Latin America nations studied (Peru, Uruguay and Brazil) as well as the region overall.

Data released in October 2013 by Tendencias Digitales indicated frequent social network usage among Venezuela’s web users, as well. Social networking was the third most popular digital activity conducted by internet users, cited by 87%. This trailed No. 1 email and second-place news by just 5 and 2 percentage points, respectively.

Based on early July 2014 data from, younger residents have likely fueled social network uptake in the country, at least when it comes to Facebook usage. Those ages 13 to 24 represented 46.5% of Facebook users in Venezuela, with 18- to 24-year-olds grabbing the largest share by far (33.9%). The 25-to-34 bracket had the second-biggest portion out of all age groups, at 26.7%. User share decreased with each age range.

October 2013 polling by PeerReach revealed teens in Venezuela also played a role in Twitter uptake. Though just 14% of internet users in the country were active on Twitter (that is, had tweeted in the past month), 38% of people in that group were teenagers.
