In 2015, there were 14.6 million US unlocked smartphone shipments, a 140% increase compared to the year prior. According to research, the growth included market share gains by mobile manufacturers like Apple and Motorola.

Strategy Analytics, a research and consulting provider, looked at vendor shipments and market share of unlocked smartphones in 2015. Florida-based manufacturer BLU had the largest market share with 35.6% in 2015, followed by Apple (12.3%), and then Motorola (9.6%).

Interestingly, Motorola saw the biggest market share increase year-over-year. It was up 8 percentage points in 2015.

Overall, growth in smartphone shipments in the US has been slowing down over the past several years, perhaps due to market saturation. According to research from J.P. Morgan, based on Gartner, smartphone shipments in 2015 were up just 5% compared to 2014. In contrast, 2011 saw an increase of 58% over the prior year.
