Travel spending in Germany inched up in 2016, as consumers spent a bit more both online and off.
According to data from a March 2017 report by Verband Internet Reisevertrieb (VIR), travelers in the country who booked at least one component of upcoming leisure travel of at least five days duration spent a total of €62.1 billion ($68.7 billion)—2.8% more than they did in 2015.
Digital-only travel spending rose at a slightly faster pace, reaching €23.3 billion ($25.8 billion), up 3.6% from the previous year.
These numbers are in line with eMarketer’s estimate of $26.41 billion in digital travel sales in Germany for 2016. eMarketer projects that figure will rise 4.2% to $27.52 billion in 2017.
US paid media ad spending will grow steadily in 2017, on the heels of a strong 2016 boosted by the Rio Olympics and the presidential election. A focus on mobile will fuel growth, pushing total media spend to more than $206 billion this year—a moderate increase of 6.1%.
