Travel Spending in Germany Inched Up in 2016

Digital sales rose 3.6%

Travel spending in Germany inched up in 2016, as consumers spent a bit more both online and off.

According to data from a March 2017 report by Verband Internet Reisevertrieb (VIR), travelers in the country who booked at least one component of upcoming leisure travel of at least five days duration spent a total of €62.1 billion ($68.7 billion)—2.8% more than they did in 2015.

Digital-only travel spending rose at a slightly faster pace, reaching €23.3 billion ($25.8 billion), up 3.6% from the previous year.

These numbers are in line with eMarketer’s estimate of $26.41 billion in digital travel sales in Germany for 2016. eMarketer projects that figure will rise 4.2% to $27.52 billion in 2017.
