Social Networking Is Vietnam's Top Smartphone Activity

The country has the world’s third-fastest-growing smartphone audience

In Vietnam, the vast majority of adult internet users have smartphones. And the most popular activity on the mobile devices is neither talking nor texting, but using social media, according to August 2015 research.

DI Marketing found that more than nine in 10 internet users in Vietnam used a smartphone, and many had more than one such device. Only among internet users in the country under 18 did smartphones have less than 90% reach.

The leading activity, regardless of age, was visiting social networks. Overall, eight in 10 smartphone users in Vietnam did so. In second place was listening to music and watching videos, with 72% support. Among smartphone users ages 25 and older, taking selfies was equally common.

A comparatively low two-thirds of smartphone users made calls or sent text messages.

eMarketer estimates that Vietnam is the third-fastest-growing smartphone market in the world, after India and Turkey, with 24.3% audience growth this year. Just 36.2% of mobile phone users in the country have a smartphone, leaving plenty of room for growth. eMarketer projects a smartphone population of 35.2 million in Vietnam in 2019, up from 20.7 million this year.
