UK teens are leaders in smartphone use, and they also demonstrate high internet penetration as well—the highest of any age group, at 95.4% of the population ages 12 to 17, according to eMarketer estimates. They will maintain this status through the end of the forecast period, when internet use will be near-ubiquitous at 98% of the population.
Unsurprisingly, social networking continues to be a popular online activity for UK teen internet users. eMarketer estimates 82% will use social networks at least monthly this year. However, this lags 10 percentage points behind the penetration rate for 18- to 24-year-olds and even sits behind the 25-to-34 age range, which will have a penetration rate of 85.6% in 2013.
Facebook penetration follows a similar pattern, with teens in third place behind 18- to 35-year-olds. But considering only social network users paints a different picture: Fully 98% of UK teens ages 12 to 17 who use social networks will use Facebook this year, compared with 96% of 18- to 24-year-olds and 94% of 25- to 34-year-olds.
Twitter usage is comparatively low, at 25.4% of teen internet users and 31% of teen social networkers.
TV remains a large part of teen life. Digital video, meanwhile, is an emerging trend that teens, predictably, have taken to easily. The main theme when it comes to TV and digital video among teens is that, while penetration levels are high, other types of media are beginning to catch up, leading to a very full daily schedule.
eMarketer estimates that 85% of UK teen internet users will watch digital video content at least once per month in 2013, either on a PC, mobile phone, tablet or other connected device. This positions teens as the group with the second-highest penetration rate among digital video viewers.
eMarketer forms its estimates of teen internet and digital activity penetration based on the analysis of survey and traffic data from research firms and regulatory agencies; company releases; historical trends; internet and mobile adoption trends; and demographic adoption trends.
