Smartphones Keep Professionals in France Connected All Day

Higher mobile responses might reveal the increasing on-the-go, always-online nature of professionals in France

Nearly 100% of business professionals in France used a desktop or laptop computer to check their work email in July 2016, according to a survey conducted by the Syndicat National de la Communication Directe (SNCD). But with so many respondents also checking work email on their smartphones, the responses might reveal the increasing on-the-go, always-online nature of professionals in France.

Almost four in 10 professionals in France said they used their smartphone to check work emails, which may simply mean that they were away from their desks often—whether on the road or working shorter hours. But it may also mean that those surveyed are never entirely away from work, as they can remain connected by another device.

Indeed, SNCD’s survey supplies some evidence that professionals remain connected via their smartphone even when they’re probably not on the clock.

Two-thirds said they used their smartphone to check work email from 7am to 9am, higher than either desktop or laptop computers (44%) or tablets (37%), suggesting they’re checking their inboxes for the first time before arriving at the office. From 9am to 7pm, computers were consistently the device most used to check work emails, though nearly 45% still checked via a smartphone throughout the day.

After 7pm, checking work emails by other devices skyrocketed again—80% used their smartphones to do so. And 83% used a tablet to do the same.

eMarketer estimates that 78% of internet users in France are also smartphone users in 2016, a figure that will grow to 81% by 2017 and, in 2020, to nearly 87%.
