Smartphones Drive Mobile Gaming Revenues in Brazil

Mobile gaming revenues in the country will near $300 million this year

Mobile video gamers in Brazil are more likely to pay for their gaming activities than those in other BRIC nations. According to data released in May 2015 by Newzoo and OneSky, of the 48.6 million mobile video game players in Brazil last year, 17.2 million paid for games, representing 35.4% of the group. In comparison, 18% paid in India, 27% in Russia and 30.1% in China.

Most mobile gamers in Brazil will play via smartphone—48.5 million—while the tablet audience will make up 20.7 million. The story will be similar next year: 51.4 million will be smartphone gamers, and 22.8 million will play on tablets.

Newzoo and OneSky expected mobile gaming revenues in Brazil to soar 60.7% this year to $296.8 million, with sales from smartphones accounting for 68.3% of the total. Next year, revenues were expected to jump another 40.0% to hit $415.5 million.

Mobile gaming is one of the most popular smartphone activities in Brazil. In an April 2015 study by Opinion Box, 56.8% of smartphone owners in the country said they played games on such devices—the second-highest smartphone app category used. Females were slightly more likely than males to use smartphone gaming apps, at 59.7% vs. 53.6%.
