More than one third of smartphone users in Germany ages 14 and older have connected their smartphone to an IoT-enabled car, according to a February 2017 survey from Bitkom. That’s nearly twice the proportion who linked up with a smart watch, the next leading IoT device.
eMarketer wrote in October 2016 about how, generally speaking, the IoT market in Germany was a niche one. In fact, just 2% of internet users in Germany said they even owned a connected car, according to a Deloitte survey from July 2016. Deloitte found that the most popular IoT devices, wireless speakers, were owned by just 9% of respondents, revealing just how small a minority IoT users are in Germany.
However, Bitkom’s data found that, among smartphone users, there was a greater level of enthusiasm for IoT’s potential.
About one in five surveyed by Bitkom said they connected their smartphone to their smartwatch. And 15% have hooked up their smartphone to an audio device.
A November 2016 survey conducted by Marketo found that 45.0% of marketers in Germany believe their customers will use IoT technology within the next year, a response rate higher than the UK’s but lower than the ones found in France and the US.
