The majority of digital buyers in the US said they would pay more for same-day delivery if they needed a package by a certain deadline. But according to May 2016 research from ecommerce fulfillment firm Dotcom Distribution, they’re not willing to pay all that much for the service.
Overall, two-thirds of digital buyers surveyed said they would pay for super-fast delivery if they had a reason for it—like someone’s birthday. But among that group, nearly eight in 10 would shell out less than $10 to get their items in just a single day. One-third said they would pay no more than $5 for same-day delivery.
This group may not be serious about the service, which typically costs more than $5. Amazon, for example, charges $8.99 per order for customers who are not a part of Amazon Prime. Loyal Prime members, of course, would pay less.
Generally, fulfillment is something digital merchants need to get right. If they don’t meet shoppers’ expectations of convenience in ecommerce, those shoppers will go elsewhere.
Nearly 90% of those surveyed by Dotcom Distribution said their decision to shop with a retailer more than once would be influenced by ecommerce order delivery times, adding another wrinkle to retailers trying to figure out how to please and retain customers.
Research from February 2016 indicates US digital buyers are generally willing to wait for their digital purchases, typically selecting economy ground or ground shipping, which can take up to a week.
At the same time, however, they probably expect that shipping to be free.
