Most in Spain Don't Pay for TV, Online or Offline

But of those who did subscribe, nearly all were pay TV-only subscribers

The majority of households in Spain in Q1 2016 were neither pay TV nor streaming video service subscribers, according to an October 2016 report from the Observatorio Nacional de las Telecomunicaciones y de la Sociedad de la Información (ONTSI). Streaming subscriptions were especially unpopular.

About one in three households in Spain subscribed only to pay TV services in Q1 2016. But hardly any households subscribed only to streaming video services—less than 1%. About 4% of households surveyed had both types of subscriptions. Still, according to ONTSI, 60% subscribed to neither.

That translates to a relatively small share of internet users watching over-the-top (OTT) streaming video in Spain: about one in four of those ages 15 and up.

Among those who do stream OT video, nearly 80% said they had did so via their fixed internet at home, but more than half also said they had done so with mobile internet on their smartphone.

Tablet-based mobile viewing was less common.

According to a June 2016 survey from Futuresource Consulting, just 5% of internet users in Spain listed subscriber video-on-demand (VOD) as the primary way they watch TV or video, which is in line with places like Italy, France and even the UK, but trailing behind countries like Canada, the US and Germany.
