Health and fitness have provided a key opening for wearables-makers, as internet users tend to be attracted to such devices to keep tabs on their activity levels. In the UK, mobile users are open to many applications that could prove relevant to wearables.
According to August 2015 polling by Aviva and ICM Research, though relatively few internet users in the UK currently use health- and fitness-related mobile apps, there is sizeable interest for these offerings.
Currently, physical tracker apps are the most popular, but just 15% of UK internet users have implemented one for themselves. Apps to track nutrition and doctor appointments or diagnose symptoms were even less popular—but many people wanted to try them.
Nearly half of all internet users surveyed wanted to use an app for appointments with their general physician (GP), and more than a third wanted apps for general healthy living and tracking physical activities.
Health and fitness have frequently been ways for wearables to break into the market.
Respondents to the Aviva/ICM Research survey who already had them noted that several wearable devices had improved their health.
Fitness bands are currently at the top of the UK wearables market, and the growing interest in health and fitness tracking will likely lead to further adoption as the nascent market expands.
