Mobile Phones Dominate Web Access in Colombia

Mobile phones play a big role in internet access for urban users

December 10, 2015

According to eMarketer estimates, 28.6 million people in Colombia use the internet at least monthly this year, or 61.1% of the total population of the country. Mobile phones have a greater reach, at 69.3% of the population, and more than half of internet users in the country have smartphones.

And those phones play a big role in internet access for urban users, according to June 2015 research from the World Wide Web Foundation. Among the primarily female respondent base, nearly two-thirds said they accessed the internet from their personal mobile phone at least 5 days per week. That was nearly twice the percentage who used the internet from a home desktop or laptop PC, or tablet, with the same frequency.

It was even less common for people to have jobs that involved daily internet use: Just 10% used the internet at work at least 5 days a week.

Data from Opera Mediaworks and the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) from Q2 2015 indicates that Colombia has the second-highest penetration of mobile internet users as a percentage of all internet users in the country compared to its Latin American neighbors, at 39.2%. Only in Chile does the mobile internet have broader reach, at 45.6% of internet users.
