Mobile Internet Use Picks Up in Asia-Pacific

Southeast Asia and social media help fuel demand

Mobile internet activity is a way of life for mobile users in Asia-Pacific, though a key gap remains between usage habits in the region’s more- and less-developed countries. According to September 2015 surveys on mobile internet usage by Internet Society (ISOC), 90% of mobile device users in Asia-Pacific access the Internet every day through their mobile device.

Mobile internet is even more important for users in Southeast Asia, where issues with the technology, cost and infrastructure of traditional internet access likely make mobile networks a more viable alternative. The same Internet Society survey noted that 52% of mobile device users in Southeast Asia and India primarily access the internet via mobile device.

Another factor helping stimulate the use of mobile internet is the popularity of social media among Asia Pacific's mobile device users. This is particularly true among younger users. Internet Society reported that 92% of those between the ages of 15 and 24 and 87% of those between the ages of 25 and 44 accessed social media via a mobile device.

When considering the most popular activities among mobile device users of all ages in Asia-Pacific, social media again came out near the top. Internet Society’s survey found that 90% of respondents across the region used their device for email, while 87% used their device for search and social media, tied as the second-most-popular options.
