Millennials Are Most Receptive to the Idea of Drone Deliveries

Boomers are not fans of the concept

October 28, 2016 | Retail & Ecommerce | Demographics

Millennials are more likely than baby boomers and Gen Xers to like the idea of drone delivery services, June 2016 research indicates. Interestingly—and at the same time not necessarily surprisingly—most boomers dislike the concept.

US Internet Users' Primary Attitude Toward Drone Delivery Services, by Generation, June 2016 (% of respondents)

According to the survey from the United States Postal Service (USPS), millennials had an optimistic attitude toward drone delivery services. In fact, nearly two-thirds said they liked the idea of them, at least somewhat. Only a small number of millennials disliked the idea very much.

Baby boomers, on the other hand, didn’t really like the concept of drone delivery services. Indeed, almost half said they disliked the idea at least somewhat. Some 28% were neutral about them and the same number of respondents said they liked the idea at least somewhat. Overall, just 8% of baby boomers said they liked the idea very much.

Gen Xers were more likely than boomers to like the idea of drone delivery services—some 46% said they liked the idea at least somewhat. However, 31% also said they disliked the idea at least somewhat.

Most Trusted Brands for Drone Delivery Services According to US Internet Users, by Generation, June 2016 (scale of 1-5*)

When it came to the brands that they trusted most to delivery their packages via drones, Amazon was the one that was most trusted, across the board. Respondents were asked to rate a brand on a scale from 1 to 5, where 1 was the most trusted and 5 was the least trusted.

Boomers said they trusted UPS and FedEx more than millennials or Gen Xers did, suggesting older respondents see logistics companies as the natural players to take up delivery via drone. And this same age group said they trusted Google less than their younger counterparts. USPS was rated as the least trusted brand by everyone except baby boomers, who trusted Google even less.

Overall, consumers seem to be somewhat receptive to drones delivering their packages. A study from Walker Sands Communications found that more than three-quarters of US internet users are at least somewhat likely to select drones as a delivery option.
