eMarketer estimates digital retailers will enjoy $5.5 billion in business-to-consumer ecommerce sales in Argentina this year, but the country lags its Latin American neighbors in usage of digital media for researching and purchasing a variety of items, according to data from Google and TNS.
Among those who had made hotel bookings in the past 12 months, buyers in Argentina were slightly ahead of their neighbors—91% had researched the hotels online. But they were less likely than their counterparts in Brazil or Mexico to have performed digital research about TV, clothing, makeup or car insurance purchases.
They were also less likely to have gone ahead and bought many of these products via digital means.
Only about a third of respondents in Argentina had booked a hotel digitally, vs. nearly half of those in Brazil or Mexico. Respondents in Brazil were nearly twice as likely to have made a clothing or footwear purchase online as those in Argentina. And Argentina fell far behind both Brazil and Mexico in purchasing TV sets and car insurance on the web.
