LINE is the most popular way for smartphone users in Japan to be social on the go, according to December 2014 research from Mobile Marketing Data Lab. Nearly six in 10 smartphone users in the country reported using LINE, with an additional 4.1% saying they had done so in the past. That compared with a bare majority of smartphone users who used Facebook and 39.3% who used Twitter.
LINE was most popular among the under-40 crowd, but Mobile Marketing Data Lab found smartphone users in their 50s were nearly as likely to use it, and more likely than those in their 40s. Only among smartphone users 60 and over was LINE not used by a majority of respondents.
Facebook usage was significantly higher among the youngest smartphone users (ages 20 to 29), at 61.6%, vs. around 47% among those 50 and older.
Twitter had the most traditional usage patterns by age, with clear—and sharp—drops in usage as respondents increased in age. More than six in 10 smartphone users in their 20s used Twitter, but just 21.4% of those over 60 did the same.
Users in most age groups were also more likely to report they had once used Twitter on their phones, but later stopped, compared with rates of Facebook or LINE abandonment.
