How Much Do People Know About AI?

Some know of it, but wouldn’t call themselves experts

May 31, 2017

Do most people know what artificial intelligence is? Yes. But are they an authority on the topic? Not really.

In a March 2017 survey from programmatic marketing firm Rocket Fuel, conducted by Qualtrics, just 10% of internet users worldwide consider themselves experts when it comes to AI—they know of the technology and they understand it.

Awareness of Artificial Intelligence Technology According to Internet Users Worldwide, March 2017 (% of respondents)

A large share of respondents (53%) said they know what AI is, but wouldn’t call themselves an expert on the subject. What’s more, three in 10 of those polled said they’ve heard of it, but don’t really know much about the technology.

According to eMarketer, in its most widely understood definition, AI involves the ability of machines to emulate human thinking, reasoning and decision-making.

Internet users are not the only ones who may not have a full understanding of artificial intelligence and what it does. A separate study from CompTIA found surprisingly low awareness of the technology among US business and IT executives.

Indeed, 54% of respondents polled last June said they were aware of AI, compared with 78% who were familiar with the concept of 3-D printing and 71% who knew of drones and virtual reality.
