In Hong Kong, the 4G Wave Grows Even Stronger

Total mobile connections are slightly down in Hong Kong

August 17, 2016 | Mobile | Telecom

An August 2016 report from the Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) in Hong Kong indicates that 4G mobile connections in the city have been steadily growing since December 2013, when there were 2.2 million mobile connections. A look at May 2016’s figures found a total of 6.7 million 4G mobile connections.

OFCA’s report also tracked the decline of 3G in Hong Kong. While there are still more 3G than 4G connections, the gap is rapidly shrinking—from 2.4 million in December 2015 to 1.4 million just six months later.

And as the gap closes, it appears to be thanks to the growth of 4G more than to the decline of 3G, which is happening somewhat more slowly.

Over that same six-month period, 4G subscriptions rose by about 13.6%. Meanwhile, 3G connections declined by about 2.4%, meaning these won’t completely disappear for a while.

But on the whole, mobile connections are slightly down in Hong Kong, from their peak in December 2014 of 17.4 million to more recent figure of 16.7 million in May 2016.

eMarketer estimated in April 2016 that smartphone users would make of 84% of all mobile phone users in in Hong Kong 2016, which paves the way for more 3G and 4G usage. That figure will climb to about 86% in 2017, and nearly 90% by 2020.
