Homegrown Vendors Push Philippines Smartphone Adoption to New Highs

Low-cost devices are an attractive upgrade for consumers

June 27, 2016 | Mobile

Demand for smartphones in the Philippines is helping to drive increasing device shipments by manufacturers to the country. According to research from IDC, device makers shipped 3.5 million smartphones in the country in Q1 2016, a growth rate of 20% over Q1 a year prior.

The latest forecasts from eMarketer estimate there will be 27.5 million smartphone users in the country as of 2016, accounting for 40% of all mobile phone users. The relatively low penetration of smartphone users suggests plenty of room for future growth as consumers look to upgrade to more sophisticated devices. eMarketer expects the number of smartphone users in the Philippines to grow at double-digit rates through 2017.

As mobile users look to purchase new smartphone devices, many are gravitating toward low-cost handsets manufactured by local device makers like MyPhone. The company, which produces the popular my28s smartphone, offers its products at price points typically below $100 , making them accessible to a wide variety of consumers. According to IDC’s estimates of smartphone shipment share by brand origin, more than half (53%) of smartphones in the country in 2015 were produced by local vendors.
