Half of Internet Users in Brazil Watch VOD

When it comes to watching TV a smartphone, Brazil again matches the US

It comes as no surprise, given the development of internet access and entertainment, that nearly 50% of internet users ages 16 and older in the US view TV and movies via video-on-demand (VOD) services. But what may raise some eyebrows is that another country in the Americas matches the US in terms of users watching VOD: Brazil.

Research from Conecta, a division of Ibope, and Worldwide Independent Network of Market Research/Gallup International (WIN) found that it’s worth noting that the 49% of internet users in Brazil who watch TV or movies via VOD is a higher reach than in Mexico or Canada. But it’s not only Brazil and the US that leads Mexico and Canada—43% of internet users ages 16 and older in Ecuador said they watch VOD weekly, also higher than either of those countries.

And when it comes to viewing TV content via a smartphone, the story remains the same: in Brazil and the US, about 30% of internet users do so, while the next closest country in the Americas, Panama, sees just 16%.

It seems that when it comes to internet users watching TV via a nontraditional device, the US and Brazil lead the way in the Americas—at least among those who are already internet users.

eMarketer estimated in April 2016 that nearly 60% of the population in Brazil will be internet users in 2016, just above average for Latin America. But with internet usage in Mexico and Peru skyrocketing, Brazil’s slow increase threaten to relegate it toward the bottom of the continent in terms of internet users.
