In Germany, It's Game Time for Mobile Video Gaming

Gaming revenues from smartphone, tablet apps up 33% year over year

Video gaming’s shift to digital has been happening for a few years, and according to IHS data cited in a July 2014 BITKOM report based on polling by ARIS, mobile is rapidly increasing its share of the video gaming market in Germany.

Smartphone and tablet gaming app revenues in Germany came in at €465 million ($620 million) in 2014, representing year-over-year growth of nearly 33%—and more than double the video game revenues generated by mobile apps two years ago. Digital and online games continued to grow, albeit at a much slower rate, while physical media remained on a downward trajectory.

The surge in mobile video gaming revenues in Germany makes sense when one looks at the top devices used by gamers. This year, BITKOM reported, the smartphone was the most popular gaming platform, rising from 44% of respondents to 78% in one year to pass desktop PCs for the No. 1 spot. While still landing in second-to-last place, tablets showed tremendous growth in users, leaping from 10% of respondents to 36% between 2013 and 2014. Meanwhile, traditional stationary video gaming consoles saw declines in usage.

Looking at an October 2013 study by and the Mobile Marketing Association, there’s no denying that mobile gaming is hot in Germany. Among mobile internet users polled, games and apps were the top type of mobile content downloaded in the past month, cited by 79% of respondents. Meanwhile, around half of that percentage (40%) had downloaded music during the same period, the second-highest response.
