Business-to-consumer (B2C) ecommerce sales in Belgium totaled €5.62 billion ($7.46 billion) in 2014, according to a January 2015 report from the Belgian association for commerce and services, Comeos. A total of 3.5 billion digital transactions took place during the year, representing an increase of 16% compared with 2013.
A June 2014 report also from Comeos further revealed that exactly one-third of digital buyers in Belgium spent more than €150 ($199.04) on web purchases of goods and services per month last year. Average monthly spending on digital purchases was €161 ($213.64), which was slightly lower than the average amount spent each month in 2013 (€170 [$225.58]).
According to the research, men in Belgium were somewhat more likely than women to be digital buyers. In fact, 62% of men in the country had bought goods or services online, compared with 55% of women. Members of the Dutch-speaking population in Belgium were also more likely than their French-speaking counterparts to have made a digital purchase, at 62% and 54%, respectively.
In total, Comeos found that 61% of the population in Belgium, or 75% of internet users, had ever made a digital purchase. The most popular items to buy online were clothing or shoes (49%), followed by hotels or overnight accommodations (40%) and books (32%). Travel and event tickets also ranked highly, as did personal care products and electronics.
